O wulkanie

Grímsvötn to kaldera przykryta grubym lodem lodowca Vatnajökull. Ciepło wulkanu topi lód od spodu, a nagromadzona woda co kilka lat wyrywa się spod lodowca w powodziach zwanych jökulhlaup. Do systemu wulkanicznego Grímsvötn należy szczelina Laki: w latach 1783–1784 wylało się z niej około 15 km³ lawy, a trujące gazy i głód zabiły około jednej piątej mieszkańców Islandii i większość zwierząt hodowlanych. Siarkowa mgła z Laki dotarła nad Europę i przyczyniła się do surowej zimy. Ostatnia erupcja Grímsvötn, w 2011 roku, była silniejsza niż erupcja Eyjafjallajökull rok wcześniej.

Historia erupcji

VEI – wskaźnik eksplozywności wulkanicznej: 0 = wylew lawy, 4 = jak Eyjafjallajökull 2010, 6 = jak Pinatubo 1991, 7 = jak Tambora 1815. Skala jest logarytmiczna – każdy stopień to ok. 10 razy więcej materiału.
