About the volcano

Stromboli is a volcanic island in the Aeolian archipelago in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Its short, rhythmic blasts of glowing lava are so distinctive that volcanologists named a whole style of eruption after it – Strombolian. Sailors have steered by its glow at night since antiquity. Its usual activity is fairly mild, but stronger paroxysms happen from time to time – as in the summer of 2019 – along with lava flows down the Sciara del Fuoco slope into the sea.

Eruption history

VEI – Volcanic Explosivity Index: 0 = lava outpouring, 4 = like Eyjafjallajökull 2010, 6 = like Pinatubo 1991, 7 = like Tambora 1815. The scale is logarithmic – each step is about 10 times more material.
