Volcano type

Complex volcanoes

Clusters of several merged eruptive centres – cones, domes and craters – forming a single massif.

A complex (or compound) volcano is a massif where several vents have been active over a long time: cones, lava domes, craters and calderas of different ages stand side by side. It is often hard to point to one main volcano, so the GVP treats the whole massif as a single entry. Activity may shift between the centres from one eruption to the next.
